Looking for a sweet treat for your next gatherings or parties? Why not try making a turnover pastry? A turnover pastry is an individual pie formed by folding a pastry sheet in half over a filling. The open edges are pressed together and sometimes crimped together so that the filling do not ooze out during cooking and eating.
Turnover pastry can be sweet or savory, mostly people fill it with fruit fillings and there are others who likes to fill it with a combination of both sweet and savory like grape and cheese. Turnover pastry is also quite unique in terms of how they can be cooked. Turnover pastry can be baked or deep fried if an oven is not available.
How to Make Cherry Turnovers
1. Two sheets frozen puff pastry 3. One Egg 5. Powdered Sugar
2. Two cups cherry pie filling 4. Heavy cream
Preheat oven to 405 degree Fahrenheit.
Place your pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface, you can use a pizza roller or sharp knife to cut it into 6 equal squares.
Whisk together egg and water in a separate bowl. Brush the edges of your puff pastry using this egg wash mixture then add two tsp. of cherry pie filling in every puff pastry square.
Fold each pastry into half to create a triangle. Crimp the edges to seal your turnover pastry.
Place it on a parchment paper lined baking sheet and lightly brush the top with the remaining egg wash.
Bake the turnover pastry for 15 minutes or until golden brown. While the pastry is baking, make the glaze by whisking together powdered sugar and heavy cream. Drizzle the glaze on top once the puff pastry has cooled down.
